As for the idea of themes I would like to put forward the following proposal(s):

• 1) PukiWiki not implicitly use SMARTY, it is too slow and unneccesary.
• 2) PukiWiki allow the usage of other templating libraries, but have them pluggable, but not mandatory.
• 3) PukiWiki continue using it's PHPtemplate style, but clean up many of the PHP structures that are defined only in the template.

As per the theming, any images, themes or styles should be independent and house their own CSS and images. This can still be achieved because PukiWiki can be hardcoded to read from a defined default theme.
